Engineers - During the years 1855 and 1856 I was in charge of some alterations and improvements of Railway Branch Line in Derbyshire, under my Father, the Engineer.
From August 1856 to May 1857, I was surveying for, and assisting in laying out, the Recife and San Francisco (Pernambuco) Railway, under the directions of I. Sool Pucker, Esqr, Mo. Inst. C. E., but was obliged to leave on account of ill health.
During the latter part of 1837 and the commencement of 1838, I was assisting my Father in his London Office.
From that time until the end of 1860, I was Resident Engineer of a Branch Line of the London and South Western Railway.
From the early part of 1861 to September 1867, I was employed as Resident Engineer, under Messrs. William Baker and Charles Dacré, carrying out very extensive alterations and improvements at London Road Station, Manchester, for the London and North Western, and Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Companies. I carried those works to a successful completion and received the thanks of the Joint Board of Directors, and a bonus of one year's salary.
